Shelter for life.
An ideal example of practical art Totem Floor Lamp relates to the structure and formation of the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, also known as hoodoos or tent rocks, the unusual rock formations that once sheltered persecuted Christians in central Anatolia. Thousands of caves were carved in soft tuffs by the people escaping the Roman aggression. Beneath the walls and below the ground is a network of cities, almost ten levels deep, with narrow passages connecting the floors. The Totem Floor Lamp shares the same idea and the philosophy of leveled caves to create a self-standing structure, a shelter for life/light. A single metal spine hidden inside the handmade ceramic six-story totem gathers all the nests and the LED bulbs on the same axis, and thanks to the rotating metal connections between the floors, each nest can revolve 360 degrees. The coiling procedure, a basic, primitive ceramics technique, is used to create the amorphous nests that shelter the light sources. Handmade curved glass diffusers guard the openings. The rough, cracked surface texture demonstrates a special chamotte clay generally used in ceramic sculptures, unique to Turkey. Since it is a handmade product, each item has a distinctive form and can never be identical to one another.
